Section four, Ethics and the Organisation, discusses the different stakeholder issues. The four most important types of stakeholders are discussed, consumers, employees, shareholders and the community. The link between ethical conduct in an organisation and the organisational culture is stressed, and some hints are given on how to create an ethical organisational culture. This structure has repercussions for the content. Thus it led me to the following remarks.
The text is different from most other texts on the subject in that the order of subjects is different. Most authors start out with a discussion on different views and theories on ethics. In this text we have to wait till chapter four for the authors to discuss the different theories on ethics, and chapter five for the stages of moral development. Although in the beginning of the text the concept of different stakeholders is already discussed, we have to wait until we read chapter eight to see ethical issues consciously connected to the different stakeholders.
I would prefer a structure where these issues would be more clearly divided by stakeholder, although the authors correctly point out that the issues always have to deal with more than one group of stakeholders.
I can easily see how the structure is a fresh approach. Personally I would use this approach more with people from business than with university students. For these students I would prefer the more traditional text where the concept of moral behaviour, the different theories on ethics is discussed up-front before delving in the minefields of ethical dilemmas.
While the text has many relevant issues, there seems to be a cultural bias, which is even more important when ethics are discussed. The text is very American, in both its outlook and its examples. In its outlook it takes the free enterprise system and the American interpretation of it as a given way of life. The ethical dilemmas are discussed in this context.
These are important forces in many European countries, instituting a nice check and balance system. Furthermore, all concrete examples deal with American organisations and situations. In this context it is interesting that an American football coach is quoted not to be confused with soccer.
This coach was known, according to the text, for his integrity. From a European perspective this is an interesting example.
There is a strong ethical question about admitting football players at a university based on their football playing capacity instead of their intellectual prowess. The fact that many of these players do not graduate or are allowed to get credits for courses or assignments that do not meet the simplest academic requirements is a well-documented fact.
So the question is why this coach is frequently used in the text as an example.
If we read those parts, he mainly deals with strictly adhering to the his rules, and is considered very ethical when compared with other football coaches. In all fairness, he is also mentioned as placing education in high regard. It could also be interpreted as a guilty conscience. A nice quality of the book is that the authors succeeded in their objective to be a guide on ethical behaviour.
In their introductory chapter they present a clear model, where they put the individual in the middle and make an important distinction between moral judgment and ethical behaviour.
They make a forceful argument against the notion that business ethics cannot be taught. Behaviour can perhaps not be taught, but awareness of ethical issues certainly can.
